Sportfishing yachts -sportfishing is a hobby for rich people

Added: 12/10/2005

Sportfishing yacht must be a vessel of considerable capacity, seaworthiness and other characteristics. Until the 1950s almost all sportfishing yachts were made of boards of wood (steel was also used for bigger yachts). All sportfishing yachts are very expensive equipment, because the sportfishing is a hobby for rich people. The sportfishing yacht is also a subject of pride and care of the owner.

Sportfishing yachts are very important part of fisherman equipment. A yacht was originally defined as a light, fast sailing vessel used to convey important persons. Now it is also used for fishing. Such vessel must be a yacht of considerable capacity, seaworthiness, speed, stability and range to transport a crew out to sea some distance, carry the large amount of equipment required, remain stable when fighting fish which, in extreme circumstances, can weigh over 500 kilograms, and safely carry the crew back in possibly unfavorable weather and sea conditions. These requirements are met by only the largest of trailer-like boats; many fishing crews use larger vessels of 9 to 15 meters (30 to 50 feet) in length.
There are many companies making sport fisherman yachts. The most known and popular of them is Rybovich, which, as it is considered, builds the best yachts among the other companies.
Until the 1950s almost all sportfishing yachts were made of boards of wood (steel was also used for bigger yachts) but nowadays there is much wider range of materials. Most common is fiberglass, but also steel, aluminum and even ferrocement are used. Wood is still used (traditional board based methods as well as modern technologies based on plywood, veneers and epoxy-glues etc.), but wood is mostly used when building individual boats, less often in industrial boat building. Modern yachts have efficient sail-plans that allow them to sail into the wind. This capability is the result of a sail plan and hull design (typically a sloop rig) that utilizes Bernoulli's principle to generate lift.
Modern yachts are descendants of working vessels used for fishing and commerce. Famous examples of these types of vessels are fishing schooners such as Bluenose and square rigged tea clippers of the 19th century such as Flying Cloud. Tall ships are the modern descendants of the tradition of these commercial vessels.
All sportfishing yachts  are very expensive equipment. The capital costs of a suitable yacht, electronics, rod, reels, line, lures, and the running costs of the fuel and other consumable is very substantial - it is quite common for an enthusiast to spend upwards of 20,000 USD on fishing tackle alone. Consequently, many sport fishermen prefer to use charter services where they hire  sportfishing yachts and equipment, and the fish-finding expertise of a captain, in preference to maintaining their own. Either way, such fishing can be an extremely expensive hobby and one in which the super-rich feature prominently.
The good sportfishing yacht is not only equipment, but also subject of pride and care of the owner. Many sport fishermen care of their yachts as about museum exhibits. It occurs because during fishing the yacht becomes almost the member of the team. Besides, owing to its price the yacht is an attribute of the high social status of the owner. Thus, the sportfishing yachts are not only are the equipment for rather expensive hobby, but also almost alive essence owing to the attitude of their owners.
